Tuesday Breakfast Notes #85

The Keys to Heaven, Take 2

"Beware that you don't look down on any of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the presence of my heavenly Father."

Matthew 18:10 NLT

There’s a pretty good chance that you have a plastic set of keys for your baby.  Maybe you bought them or maybe you received them as a gift for that little one of yours.

The most recent set in our family was meant for teething. But did you know they’re actually the keys to Heaven?

I mean, that’s what my youngest daughter, Sylvia, said when she was 6, so it’s definitely true.

Here’s how I found out: One day we were with my sister and her 5 month old, Gatlin. The teething keys were in his carseat. Sylvia picked up the keys, and I began to suggest the use of each one.

“The blue and green one there, I think that key is for his tractor,” I told her.

Sylvia jumped in next. “The yellow and orange key is for driving his semi truck.”

I asked Sylvia “what about that third key? The blue and red one, what’s it for?” She proudly announced that the third key was Gatlin’s “sky key to God!”

It’s so easy to see, or hear, little moments in our days and not recognize their importance. Jesus tells us in Matthew 18:10 that our little one’s “angels are always in the presence of [His] heavenly Father.”

I can’t imagine my daughter’s announcement that her cousin possessed the “sky key to God” slipped past the angels, or the Father, in Heaven that day. There was likely laughter and singing in Heaven at that moment. This was a 6 year old sharing the love of Jesus, as only a 6 year old can!

Jesus is our “sky key to God,” our key to the Father in Heaven. We don’t even need to have a set of plastic keys to get in. But seeing them as a reminder doesn’t hurt.

If your little one is teething, and their teether is a set of keys, I pray it will remind you to turn to Jesus, your very own key to Heaven. If all you see is your house key, or your car key, I pray that will be your reminder that you can invite the key to Heaven into your heart, again and again and again.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank you for being my key to Heaven. Amen.
