Tuesday Breakfast Notes #66

Wanting more than applesauce

But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

Hebrews 5:14 ESV

Lately I’ve been in the mood for cinnamon applesauce. We had the applesauce pouches for the girls' lunches, and naturally the girls weren't interested. Which means they've been all mine.

I eat them while I wander around the house trying to remember what I'm looking for, or while I'm in the car. If I'm extra hungry, or just feeling fancy, I squeeze the applesauce onto a graham cracker. Any other parents enjoying the finest that toddler dining has to offer these days?

It's tasty. It works in a pinch. But it's not enough fill me up. It's not enough to keep me going.

When I was a kid in church, it was a lot the same way. Sunday school was coloring, short stories, a bible verse and a song. It never occurred to me that the animals might have needed to traveled to get to the ark. I never questioned how God put Jonah in a big fish. Jesus was asleep on that boat in the storm because it was rest time!

Like applesauce for our littles, it's a place to start building a foundation. But we don't need to, and shouldn't, remain satisfied with just applesauce!

Now that I'm grown up, I eat cooked apples on a pork chop! I also know that God really did get animals to Noah, and that I don't have to understand how. And I wonder how God spoke into the heart of Noah's wife as she watched him build.

Now that I'm grown up, apples on a salad really hit the spot. I know that Jonah really was in a fish for 3 days. And I wonder if he felt the rumble of hunger during that time or if his feet got cold.

Now that I'm a grown up, I know the difference between an apple dumpling and my mom's apple rolls. I also know that Jesus really did calm that storm! And I'm wondering if the disciples were looking at the sky, or hiding in their hands as it happened.

I will always love applesauce. But I won't stop at applesauce. I still enjoy the simplicity of a Sunday school lesson for young kids (especially all the VBS songs). But I also really want to dig and find out what else is in there.

The Bible Project is one place I find myself again and again as I try to understand more. What are some of your favorite resources? And what bible verses are you sinking your teeth into these days?
